I’m taking the GRE soon and this is a practice question. Can you please tell me how to do this?

Thanks so much in advance!

Employees of a discount appliance store receive an additional 20% off of the lowest price on an item. If an employee purchases a dishwasher during a 15% off sale, how much will he pay if the dishwasher originally cost $450?

A. $280.90
B. $287
C. $292.50
D. $306
E. $333.89

Answer is D

You have to pay attention to the order that you do these percentage calculation. first calculate the sale price, then calculate the employee’s discounted price. you canNOT add the two discounts. The wording is such that the employee discount is discounted from “…the LOWEST price” not “the original” price.

$450 * 85% = $450 * 85/100 = 450*0.85 = $382.50 = Sale price
$382.50 * 80% = $382.50 * 80/100 = 382.5 *0.8 = $306 = final answer

Good Luck with the GRE!
